Welcome to the "Best of BreakAway"

Let me introduce myself, I am Curt Dykema, Director of Breakaway Worship - My interest in music goes back to my earliest years. I first began leading worship for churches in the early 1990s. I was asked to provided special music here at Community on several occasions, and those experiences helped prepare the way for me to accept the offer to join Community's staff. My wife, Diane, and I reside in Zeeland and have four grown children.

Music and lyrics are my favorite form of expression. Songs have been used to convey every emotion known to a person -- joy, brokenness, lasting love, new love, peace, hurt, anger, encouragement, struggle and so on. I LOVE that about music. I am intrigued by songs written about “spiritual” things. Let me explain: I am of the persuasion that it takes more faith to believe that everything just evolved or happened than it does to believe that “God” started all of this. When I consider all the intricate details of life, I’m compelled to believe in a “creator”. When I consider a creator, I can’t help but consider that he wants to be a part of our lives. If we read the Bible, we find that Jesus pursues a relationship with us at a great cost to himself.

Below, we have listed some of our favorite songs performed over the last few years with comments about the special meaning of the song. For our upcoming concert we are asking that would vote on the song selection. On the left hand side of the screen, select the song or songs you would like to hear us perform!

50 Ways to Leave Your Lover from the "Heroes of the Faith" series
"The prophet, Hosea's, life with his unfaithful wife is a reflection of our lives with God -- God NEVER gives up on us, even when we give up on ourselves.  The reason that's so important is that we all have this hunger for intimacy, acceptance, and approval.  We want to belong, to be loved, and to have at least one unbreakable relationship in our lives.  The good news is that God says. 'You can count on me, no matter what.'"
Cats in the Cradle from the message "Who's Holding the Bag"
"When we have to choose between work and family, we too often choose work, leaving the people we care about most holding the bag.  Eventually, they get tired of carrying the lion's share of the relational load and they treat us how we treated them ... making excuses and breaking promises.  After all, they learned to set their priorities from watching us.  What are you teaching your kids about your priorities?"
Centerfield from the message "Are You Ready to Play?"
"Are you ready to play the game of life the way God wants you to play it?  The way your spiritual coach wants you to play it?  Are you eager to get in there and make an impact for God?"
Desperado from the message "Spiritual Discipline"
"While it may seem romantic, the undisciplined life is ultimately destructive.  Proverbs 1:7 says 'The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.'  In order to live the disciplined life, we need delayed gratification, advanced decision-making, accountability, and a surrendering to God's will."
Feel Like a Number from the message "You're Not a Number ..."
"In Jesus' day, salt and light were extremely important and valuable.  Salt was a preservative and added zest to food.  Light in a time without electricity was treasured.  Jesus tells his followers that you are not just a number.  You are not unimportant.  You have a special calling.  You are to be salt and light in your world!"

Go Light Your World from the series "Walk Across the Room"
"Christians need to share their faith with the people in their lives.  The first and most important step is to explain why we feel that having a relationship with Jesus Christ is important to us.  We've talked about how and when to tell our personal faith stories and why each of us needs to be prepared to do that."
Have I Told You Lately from the message "Laughter and Libido"
"Of all people, Christians should be the most joyful!  However, there is a correct time for laughter and a correct time for acting on our libido.  'You are not your own.  You were bought with a price.  Therefore, honor God with your body' (1 Corinthians 6:18-20).  Married couples should enjoy God's gift of sexuality and continually renew their comment and love for each other."
Heart of the Matter from the message "Forgiving the Unforgivable"
"When we forgive someone, we're releasing ourselves from the prison of the past.  Forgiveness is simply deciding to stop letting the hurt of yesterday pollute and poison our lives today.  It's a choice.  But know that unforgiveness spirals downhill.  It leads to resentment, to bitterness, to hatred, to an all-consuming desire for revenge.  Maybe you need to ask someone for forgiveness.  Maybe you need to ask God for forgiveness.  Or maybe you need to let go of the hurt and bitterness in your own life and offer forgiveness to someone who may not deserve it.  Whatever it is that you need to do, don't wait -- do it today."
I Am a Rock from the series "Movies that Matter - Castaway"
"Wilson, the volleyball, was the best friend of castaway Chuck Nolan (Tom Hanks). The bottom line is that people need people.  We are born to be in relationships -- in fact, we can't survive without them.  Strip humanity down to its bare essentials, and what we're left with is relationships.  The question we end with is, 'Do friends make you a better person?'  The reason I ask is because in the end, who you're with determines who you are."
I Can See Clearly Now from the series "What Matters - Vision"
"Vision is the ability to see solutions to the problems of everyday life.  It is sorely lacking in our world today, so we need to learn how to become solution-oriented people -- visionaries who can see their way through the problems, challenges, and disappointments in life that we regularly encounter.  The best way to gain this vision is to have a clear vision of God's presence in our lives, because what we see determines what we do."

Lonely People from the message "Who is Your Zacchaeus?"
"There are a lot of people like Zacchaeus in our world -- lonely people.  Experts tell us that even with all the communication tools we have in our high-tech world, loneliness is an epidemic.  Jesus had a pattern of loving people that the world saw as unlovable.  One dirty job of Christianity is for us to love the lonely, unlovable people in our circles.  If we do, we may be very surprised what God can do for them and through them."
Jesus is Just Alright from the message "Who Do You Say Jesus Is?
"Is Jesus just 'alright' with you?  C.S. Lewis (and Bono) would say that either Jesus was a lunatic, or he is Lord.  Which is He for you?  If He is Lord, then Jesus calls upon us to try to transform our culture from what it is into what it should be."
Leader of the Band from the message "Are You Ready to Play?"
"Are you ready to play the game of life the way God wants you to play it?  To do so, we all need a parent or mentor who will effectively coach us towards doing so.  Such a coach will have a relationship with us, practice what they preach, instruct us, evaluate us, hold us accountable, and inspire us.  If you don't have such a coach, then try to find one.  And when you're ready, you need to accept the responsibility of coaching others."
Let's Get Together from the message "Get on the Bus"
"The first step to overcoming our challenges in life is to start, to try.  Like Forrest Gump, it's hard to get on the bus for the first day of school.  What challenges awaited us after leaving the security of home?  To be successful, we have to keep getting on the bus.  And remember that even when you do achieve success, it won't mean much if you don't have people around you to share it with -- people who love you and people that you love."
Like a Rock from the message "Endurance"
    "
We all go through times in our lives when we want to quit.  Giving up, tossing in the towel, and walking away from our responsibilities can sometimes look very appealing.  Endurance is the ability to crash through the quitting points of life."

Midnight Oil from the message "Markey's Mother"
    "
This song describes a mother who would stay up late at night praying for her family.  All of us are born with certain needs that either are met early in life, or they're missed for the rest of their lives.  Examples of this are we all need someone who will 1) Love and accept us unconditionally,   2) protect us,   3) Set boundaries and limitations for us, 4) Teach us what matters in life   5) Assure us that what we do and who we are matters, and 6) be gently honest, even when it hurts."
    Nothing Compares

Only the Good Die Young from "Rethinking Life - Laughter & Libido"
"Would Billy Joel give this same advice found in his song to his daughter Alexa Ray Joel?  Of all people, Christians should be the most joyful!  However, this is a correct time for laughter and libido.  'You are not your own.  You were bought with a price.  Therefore, honor God with your body" (1 Corinthians 6:18-20)."
Please Come to Boston from the message "Stubbornness"
"The plight of stubborn romantics is sometimes a sad one. In our pride, we may think that we are the captain of a battleship, but God's will and purposes is the unmovable lighthouse on the solid rocky coast.  As He did with Pharoah, God gives us freedom -- but we fail to yield to God's will at our own peril.  Each successful relationship requires people who will ultimately place the health of the relationship before personal desires."
Redeemer from the message "A Three-Day Story"
"Many stories in the Bible are 'three-day stories'.  More often than not, these stories start out with a tragedy -- Day 1 is a really dark day.  Things seem to get worse, and there is uncertainty, anxiety and despair.  That's Day 2.  But there's always a Day 3 -- a day when God shows up.  Then the story takes a 180 degree turn.  Day 3 is God's day."

Remember Your Chains from the message "Remember Your Chains"
"I think we have short memories. God is forever showing himself to us. A few times a year, we celebrate communion and remember what God has done for us. But in between, we often forget. Maybe, like Israel, we have forgotten what it's like to be in chains. Maybe we have forgotten that when we walk in our own way - we walk in vain. Maybe we have forgotten that it was the Lord your God who brought us out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. This song reminds us of our own bondage to sin. Remember your chains - remember the prison that once held you before the love of God broke through. Remember the place you were without grace. It's all about perspective. In light of all, we have been forgiven, and we need to remember."
Runnin' Down a Dream from the message "Dreamer"
"We are not always kind to the dreamers in our society. They often challenge the status quo, and change is often unwelcome. God often works through people who are 'runnin down a dream'. From the story of the dreamer, Joseph, we should learn that while life doesn't always seem fair, we must still keep our faith and our hope. We should also understand that God has a dream for each of us -- our job is to connect our dreams to His dreams for us."
Show Me Your Glory from the message "Expanding Our Faith"
"If we're serious about expanding our faith, we need to start being God-centered .. to make the shift from ME to GOD. We need to have a 'Copernicus moment' to realize that we're not the center of the universe, and that the world doesn't revolve around us. God doesn't exist to make a big deal out of us ... we exist to make a big deal out of God."
Somewhere Over the Rainbow from the series "What Matters - Vision"
"Vision is the ability to see solutions to the problems of everyday life. It is sorely lacking in our world today, so we need to learn how to become solution-oriented people -- visionaries who can see their way through the problems, challenges, and disappointments in life that we regularly encounter. The best way to gain this vision is to have a clear vision of God's presence in our lives, because what we see determines what we do."
Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word from the message "Stubbornness"
"Each successful relationship requires people who will ultimately place the health of the relationship before personal desires. While 'sorry' may be the hardest word, it is often the most important."

Spirit in the Sky from the message "What Happens When We Die?"
"This question is one that has been foremost on the minds of human beings since the beginning of history.  We know some things about heaven, but not everything.  The New Testament teaches us that because of Jesus' victory over death, death ultimately does not have the victory over us.  Instead, in the twinkling of an eye, we shall be raised."
Sweetly Broken from the series "What Matters"
"We all go through times in our lives when we want to quit.  Giving up, tossing in the towel, and walking away from our responsibilities can sometimes look very appealing.
Endurance is the ability to crash through the quitting points of life."
Takin it to the Streets from the message "The Dance"
"We've been still and stagnant for too long. Somewhere along the line we lost that winsome, charismatic grace and beauty that the church of Jesus Christ was famous for.  The church needs to move once again with beauty and grace and elegance and passion.  The world needs to look at us with longing, wishing they could do what we do, wishing they have what we have, wishing they could join us in the dance."
The Sound of Silence from the message "Listening to Outsiders"
"The church is pretty good at listening to God and to those inside the church, but we've turned a deaf ear to the questions and the issues of people outside the church.  As a result, we may be guilty of preaching good, biblical, but irrelevant sermons.  We need to try and listen and answer questions people have about the existence of God and His relevance; why evil, pain, and suffering exist and what we can do about it; and what the Bible says about sex, morality, and heaven and hell."
What Sin?  from the message "Sewing Fig Leaves"
"God wants to give us a second chance at life.  That's what Jesus is all about.  But first we have to admit it, come clean, tell the truth, and take responsibility for what we've done.  And when we do that, when we confess our sins, then by God's grace, we can be born again."

Who Am I from the message "Who Am I?"
"Science can tell us HOW things were created, but the Bible tells us WHO created it -- and the wonder and diversity of the universe shouts to the glory of God."
Who Do You Think You're Foolin' from the "Secret Confessions" Series
"This series looked at the church from the perspective of people who didn't attend church.  The message of "Authenticity" dealt with what some people call hypocrisy ... when you talk to people who've given up on church, they often say the reason they leave is because the church is full of hypocrites."
    Word of God Speak

Yearn from the message "Sixth Sense"
"The question was about the Holy Spirit and spirituality in general.  There is a fascination in our culture with spirituality ... people want to know how we bridge the gap between the physical world and the spiritual world.  Books on spirituality channeling reincarnation, the occult and the apocalypse are perpetually on the best sellers list, and whether we know it or not, what we're really searching for is a relationship with God and with people."
You Can Go Your Own Way from the message "God Shows the Way"
"This is a song about someone who doesn’t want what the songwriter wants. Lindsey Buckingham was in love with Stevie Nicks. He wanted to give her his world. For awhile, she took it, but then she wanted nothing to do with it. She wanted to go her own way. And he had to let her. It’s kind of like our relationship with God sometimes. He is in love with us. He wants to give us His world. But we want to go our own way. And because he has given us free will, He has to let us – to our detriment. That’s what this message is about.  God will tell us the way, but He will not make you follow it. He will stand in your way at times, and He may try and give you direction. But if you are intent on destruction – You CAN go your own way."
Waiting On The World to Change from the message "Let No One Lose Heart:  Overcoming Your Goliaths"
"Young David was not waiting for the world to change when encountered by Goliath and the Philistines -- he changed the world.  David teaches us how to overcome most of our Goliaths by being willing and prepared and belonging to God.  However, ultimately, we cannot overcome the Goliath of death, but Jesus has done that for us and will one day bring us to a place where there are no more tears and no more Goliaths."
